Concerned Parents and Residents for PS199 Wed 11/19 6:30 CEC Passes the Resolution

At this meeting, the CEC District 3 passed the resolution. We support this resolution which supports our young children, PS199, and relocates the Center School. We want to thank the CEC for passing this resolution. This was a big step for us, but just a step, as there are still several steps to go through in the process. For example, the DOE still needs to approve everything. Continue

Lisa Booker CEC Draft Resolution - 199/191 rezoning

Does anyone know further details about the proposed rezoning of PS199 -- specifically those changes that move current PS199 zoned students into PS191? "CDEC 3 recommends that the zone of PS199 be modified, effective in the 2010-2011 school year, so that its zoned population can fit into six kindergarten classes, providing that any zone line changes will take into account the ability of neighboring schools PS 191 and PS87 to expand their zoned populations slightly," Continue

Angeline Huang Other people to contact, and my thoughts on some sensitive issue that we have to address

I have also emailed Christine Quinn (NYC City Council Speaker) and Jerry Nadler (UWS congressman). They don't have email addresses (because of spam) - I just cut and pasted the body of my letter and submitted via web form. Looking to the future, we also need to get on Community Board 7 and make it clear that we need a new school in the area (there is already land and developer support for this - in fact, the developer of Riverside South aka Trump had to promise this to get the land rezoned). Th… Continue

Angeline Huang My letter to the people on the contact list

Please feel free to copy, and modify to include your child's name. We have lived on the Upper West Side for over 10 years, and hopefully many more. We are very fortunate that PS199 is our local school in every sense of the word, as it is only 5 minutes walk away from our front door. Our daughter, * turns next year, and we have always hoped to send her to PS199. Unfortunately, due to overcrowding, she and her sister * may not be able to attend because one of the proposals before the DOE is to… Continue

Howard Schechter Letter to the CEC

To all, It has come to the attention of many parents, especially those of PS 199, that ‘right thing to do for the PS 199 students and the community and that the will of the majority of the parents of the 199 catchment’ is being overridden by the politics and maneuvering of the Center School. Politics should not drive the sound decisions that will effect the majority of a catchment, nor the education of primary school children throughout the District, but especially in those schools that are alr… Continue

Roger Miller More letters to share

Dear Parents, Please read this thread of emails from the bottom up. I sent this first email (at bottom) to everyone in public office listed on this site, including Mayor Bloomberg. I received a pretty quick response from Rob Wilson, the educational director in Gale Brewer's office and wrote back to him. I just want to share my arguments in case they resonate with anyone and help you to write something more quickly. We need to put pressure on these folks. I believe that the one thing poliContinue

Roger Miller Here is what I wrote to the community board.

Parents of current and entereing PS199 students, Please feel free to use any of this language if it resonates with you: The ONLY reasonable and effective solution is to relocate the center school. It is not a catchment school. Its students traverse from all over the city and would not be inconvenienced relocating to an UWS school with excess capacity just blocks away. Center school students are aged 10-14 (grades 5-8) who are displacing students aged 4-10 (Read: Todllers!) from PS199-- a goo… Continue

Concerned Parents and Residents for PS199 Recap CEC/DOE 10/23 Meeting: Ignoring Our Community: What's Going On Here ?

Last night's CEC/DOE meeting which was open to the public was a bad night for the entire PS199 community: children, parents and residents. At last night's CEC/DOE meeting, there was: * More discussion about CAPPING at PS199 to prevent zoned children from attending PS199. The DOE talked about Capping in Sept 2009 to ONLY 2 Kindergarten classes. * There was NO discussion about relocating Center Shool. * There was more discussion about moving other schools but leaving Center School in PS199 buildi… Continue

Concerned Parents and Residents for PS199 Center School's Diversionary Tactic: Resorts to outrageous lies about PS199 community and Scorched Earth Policy

Since the Center School has no education-based reason to stay in PS199 building, they're only rationale for staying is "Diversity." They are saying that PS199 is a "bunch of rich white people". Here is excerpt from Center School's official response to the idea of relocating them to reduce overcrowding at PS199: " it is insulting that anyone would want to evict The Center School from its home of 26 years. As far as I can tell this was motivated by some very affluent new West Siders, including ma… Continue

Concerned Parents and Residents for PS199 Community and Neighborhood are United !

Status Update: 10/23/08 Most of the PS199 community has been kept completely in the dark about the major overcrowding problem at PS199 and the very real possibility that kindergarteners may be denied access to PS199 starting in Sept 2009. The DOE plans to decide what to do by 11/30/08 if not sooner. Fortunately, with this web site and the efforts of many active parents, we have now shined a spotlight on this major crisis that affects everyone in our community. Not only have we informed,… Continue

Concerned Parents and Residents for PS199 Center School appears to be the only remaining obstacle that is preventing all our neighborhood children from attending PS199 & having more space to learn: PS9 Welcomes Center School, Anderson School Open to Relocation

As you know, we and PS199 support Relocating the Center School for educational reasons. The Center School is a NON-ZONED MIDDLE SCHOOL that occupies a floor in the PS199 building. The Center School is NOT related to PS199 at all. Approximately 90% of these older children are NOT from the community. Once Center School is relocated, then PS 199 would be able to utilize the school building in its entirety (800 or so stude… Continue

PRESS ABOUT PS199 OVERCROWDING

In District 3, parent council recommends ...
Eric Shuffler, whose 4-year-old son would attend PS 199 next year, told me that parents are “grateful” that the CEC “clearly recognizes that the neighborhood children should receive priority to their neighborhood zoned school.”

CATCHMENT-22
West Siders who are straining to make their mortgages consider PS199 a godsend, a way to avoid adding $20,000 in private-school tuition (per kid!) to the annual household budget. Needless to say, parents take serious pains to live within P.S. 199’s catchment and are unhappy to find, all of a sudden, that a seat in the nearest public school may not be a given. (11/26/07)

P.S. 199 REZONING PLAN

There’s a middle school, the Center School, that’s housed within PS199. If they were to relocate, PS199 would have additional capacity. (9/25/08)

'CRISIS' - NYC School Overcrowding
PS199 was built to accommodate 476 students, but it has nearly 200 more than that. Parents told CBS 2 there are fifth grade classes with more than 30 students and one teacher. The maximum class size for that grade is supposed to be 23. (10/3/08)

NY's Coveted Public Schools Face Jam
The process used to figure out where to build new schools is critically flawed. PS199 is struggling to accommodate a wave of prospective kindergarteners. (5/9/08)

Meltdown May Burn Public Schools
Public school parents fear the financial crisis will cause a huge influx of private school kids into the already overcrowded public system. (10/10/08)
